Booklist Review
Librarians, career counselors, consumers, legislative aides, and others frequently need to know whether a jurisdiction licenses or certifies certain occupations and professions and what the requirements are. This directory answers questions about licenses required by a state or federal agency for individuals. It does not include voluntary certification or county or municipal licenses. Arranged by job categories based on (but broader than) the list used by the Occupational Outlook Handbook, this directory shows which state and/or federal agency regulates each job, provides contact information, and lists the requirements and cost for each credential listed. In addition, relevant examinations are described, and activities authorized by each license are listed. Exemptions and reciprocity are noted. A master list of job titles provides cross-references to job categories. Massage therapists, for example are included in the chapter headed "Physical Therapists." Appendix 1, "Occupations Rarely Licensed," lists occupations licensed in fewer than six states (e.g., amusement-ride inspector, butter grader, tattoo artist). Appendix 2 lists state licensing information sources and offers a geographic index that lists the licenses issued by each state. This directory is based on information gleaned from licensing agencies and boards, compilations of state laws, publications of trade and professional associations, and state occupational-information coordinating committees. Requirements for Certification of Teachers, Counselors, Librarians, and Administrators for Elementary Schools, Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges (annual, Univ. of Chicago) overlaps with part of this book, but the Gale directory also covers medical workers, morticians, lobbyists, and many other occupations. This welcome addition to the reference shelf will be valuable to a variety of users. (Reviewed Dec. 15, 1993)
