Booklist Review

Rather than focusing on one particular aspect of the green movement--say, air pollution or deforestation--Britisher and author (Seeing Green) Porritt literally covers the world, from arms spending to population. As the former director of a U.K. environmental pressure group, he obviously holds near and dear certain tenets that many would refute. Yet as an introduction to the future of the earth and the steps possible to ensure a better, safer planet, this is a well-written polemic, with photographs, newspaper excerpts, and cartoons, that includes activities all, from multinational corporation to individual, can pursue. A bias toward the European movement, which is more advanced and oftentimes more radical than that in the U.S., skews his vision and recommendations somewhat, and many of his prescriptions--such as holistic health, public transportation, living cities--will require a nodding acquaintance with green issues and solutions. It's not easy being green, noted Kermit the frog. The answers will not please everyone. ~--Barbara Jacobs
