CHOICE Review

An introductory review of the physical and technological principles associated with the present-day design, fabrication, and application of light emitting diodes (LEDs). Based upon their years of research and development work with Telefunken GmbH, the authors have prepared a survey suitable for upper-division physical science or engineering undergraduates and for practicing scientists and engineers who need to become familiar with this established and expanding area of electronic technology. After a rather cursory statement of the relevant solid state and semiconductor physics, the remaining six chapters are devoted to LED materials, chip fabrication, common chip structures, physical principles of colorimetry, optoelectronic properties of LEDs, and LED applications. Except for the first, each chapter contains numerous tables, graphs, illustrations, or photographs as well as references to both historical and current literature. All chapters conclude with a series of questions (with answers) to test comprehension. This is an appropriate acquisition for academic libraries and is recommended for self-study by those with the necessary background.-C.A. Hewett, Rochester Institute of Technology
