CHOICE Review

Although performances of Arnold Schoenberg's music have diminished, the astonishing evolution of his composing style from the 1890s to the 1920s continues to offer an example of the most decisive individual path in the evolution of music over the past century. Among several recent books about the composer-theorist-teacher, Michael Cherlin's Schoenberg's Musical Imagination (CH, Feb'08, 45-3113) comes closest to MacDonald's in examining the music and writings of Schoenberg's entire career, particularly the cultural milieu underpinning his musical direction. In this fully revised edition of the original work (CH, Nov'77), MacDonald takes into account the thinking about the composer and change in attitudes toward modern music over the past decades. The book is distinctive in two respects. First, its prose is intended for the intelligent layperson, as befits "The Master Musician" series. Second, the author, a respected British writer on music, shows that by applying some effort readers can find pure enjoyment in Schoenberg's compositions rather than regard them as examples of his methodology. Schoenberg taught, wrote, and practiced the notion that composers must pursue relentlessly their particular "idea," a blending of inspiration and technical control, and his own odyssey was a perilous and lonely one. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals; general readers. W. K. Kearns emeritus, University of Colorado at Boulder
