CHOICE Review

Thames and Hudson has consistently published outstanding portable editions at very reasonable prices such as "The World of Art" series, of which this is a recent addition. The series is well written, copiously illustrated, and beautifully printed and bound. However, the Livingstons have taken on a formidable task with this book and in the process have lost sight of whether it is a catalog, directory, dictionary, or glossary. Not only does it deal with biographies but descriptions of journals, magazines, design organizations, technical information, and typefaces. The selected biographies are all too brief (and in some instances incorrect) and the historical aspects are too general and Eurocentric. Typography, which is one of the major elements of graphic design, is represented by the biographies of only 24 designers and 26 typefaces. The range is too limited and the information overly simplified and biased. Also included is a confusing 150-year chronology tracing the evolution of graphic design from 1840 and an eight-page color section with images too small for viewing or studying. The authors' chronology and narrative on "the use of colour in graphic design" is highly informative but difficult to read (due to the use of an italic type style as text). All this is crammed into 200 pages, making each entry a mere footnote! The result is a disappointment considering the great need for books that explain and expand the subject of graphic design. D.
