Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Since the 1979 publication of The Writings of Robert Smithson , Robert Smithson's significance as a spokesman for a generation of artists has been widely acknowledged and the importance of his thinking to contemporary artists and art critics continues to grow. In addition to a new introduction by Jack Flam, The Collected Writings includes previously unpublished essays by Smithson and gathers hard-to-find articles, interviews, and photographs. Together these provide a full picture of his wide-ranging views on art and culture.

CHOICE Review

It is impossible to imagine the contemporary art movement that utilizes earth as sculptural material or the current emphasis on and concern about environmental art in general without the work of Robert Smithson (1938-1973). The relatively small number of publications about and by Smithson are predominantly of high quality, including the highly prized and now out-of-print publication of his collected writings, The Writings of Robert Smithson (1979) edited by Nancy Holt and designed by Sol LeWitt. It is, thus, with great enthusiasm that one greets this well-produced and eminently affordable revised and expanded edition, a recent title in the publisher's series "The Documents of Twentieth Century Art," edited by art historian Jack Flam, who also provides an introduction. This new edition retains LeWitt's design and three-part organization of published writings, interviews, and unpublished writings. Material that has come to light since 1979 and/or material not included in the 1979 edition has been added to this new edition: four new texts to the first section; three to the second section; and more than 30 to the final section, only eight of which have previously appeared (in Eugenie Tsai's Robert Smithson Unearthed, CH, Mar'92). Also included is the biographical note from the first edition, with corrections. This essential title for all collections of modern and contemporary art is recommended for all levels.
