Library Journal Review

Louise Bourgeois: The Insomnia Drawings, on the other hand, is a superior book on this major American artist. Despite the cost, it is well worth obtaining; it contains 220 of the finest facsimile illustrations, a pair of lucid and well-written essays, and the best chronology on the artist to date. The "Insomnia Drawings" themselves are riveting and illuminate the artist's world of poetic thought. They record seven months of her night-drawing period, from November 1994 through June 1995. A variety of subjects including people, architecture, and flowers intertwine in a seemingly endless flow. Bourgeois captures humor, seriousness, and infinity in simple line drawings that suggest schematic diagrams. They are highly inviting to the general public as well as the trained professional. This two-volume compendium stands among the finest published in all of the art and humanities field this year and should be seriously considered for all collections. Highly recommended.
