CHOICE Review

Tourism is a complex social phenonenon that has come to play an increasingly important role in the late 20th-century global economy. Ryan surveys much recent social science research on tourism from the English-speaking countries in this interdisciplinary text, which includes works from geography, economics, sociology, and psychology. Chapters focus on such topics as the societal changes that have generated demand for tourism; the nature of the tourist experience and the resort area; the ecological, social, cultural, and economic impacts of tourism; and marketing issues. Ryan's British style is scholarly yet reasonably accessible to the nonexpert. The bibliography incorporates US and Canadian as well as British references. For the reader new to tourism studies this book might be a good place to start. Like one's first guided tour through an exotic destination, it covers a very large area in a very short time.
