Certainly a testament to the greatness of art historian H.W. Janson, this book is a pendant to Robert Rosenblum's 19th Century Art (CH, Jun '84). It is a comprehensive survey from 1776 to 1905, encompassing sculptors of the major European countries and the US. Janson not only cites the more renowned sculptors and their key monuments, analyzing them with clarity, insight, and originality, but also includes many lesser-known sculptors whose works are distinguished and known but have been neglected by previous writers. Janson has given issue to the sociopolitical and cultural factors and revivals that have influenced sculpture while evaluating and finding a basis for clarifying neoclassic aesthetics. The author investigates all aspects and types of sculptures as well as new techniques and inexpensive replica production, revealing the overwhelming variety that gives a new meaning and importance to sculpture and its affinity to painting. This text stands alone and without predecessor, and Janson avoids the esoteric use of illustrated material found in the Rosenblum text. There are 321 superb black-and-white photographs plus a table of contents, complete index, and an inexhaustible bibliography that in itself gives ultimate value. The style of writing is concise yet erudite and exciting while being ultimately readable and absorbing. Horst Waldemar Janson was born on October 4, 1913 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He studied at the University of Munich and the University of Hamburg. He came to the U.S. and finished his Ph. D at Harvard University in 1942. He is a scholar of art history known for his book History of Art which was published in 1962. He taught at Worcester Art Museum and the University of Iowa. He authored two award winning books Apes and the Ape Lore in the Middle Ages and The Renaissance and Sculpture of Donatello. He died on September 30, 1982.(Bowker Author Biography)
