School Library Journal Review

YA-- Intertwining biography with critical analysis, each of these books is like a room in an art gallery devoted to a particular artist. Arranged in scrapbook format, each man's life, his materials, techniques, photographs, and letters are juxtapositioned with specific works and commentary. The amount of actual text is limited. Key subjects or individual developments are presented in double-page spreads. Paintings are reproduced in full-color and drawings of memorabilia are shown with adjacent explanatory notes. Sometimes sections of a work are enlarged so that special details can be easily seen. Information is accessible, succinct, and interesting. Enough art history and personal data are provided to show how they influenced each artist's completed works. Timelines synthesize earlier facts, and maps show museums that own at least three masterpieces by these painters. Indexes are brief, but sufficient.-- Arlene Hoebel, W. T. Horn Book Review

The piecemeal design of these books invites the reader to dip in and read small segments in order to easily learn a great deal or just the most important facts. Each double-page spread contains up to a dozen reproductions of artwork, sketchbooks, artists' materials, and examples of techniques, with extensive information appearing in captions and other small blocks of type. Included is a list of where to find each artist's works. Glos., ind. From HORN BOOK 1993, (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
