Remote sensing is a rapidly evolving field. Schott (imaging science; director, Digital and Remote Sensing Laboratory, Rochester Institute of Technology) offers this new edition (1st ed., CH, Apr'98, 35-4512) that describes the tools and procedures required to extract information from remotely sensed data using the image chain approach. Schott explains that his intent with this book, reinforced by his own teaching, is to treat the process of study of remote sensing as a continuous flow of information to the eventual user. He examines the limitations obstructing the flow of information to the user, specifically exploring topics of energy-matter interaction, radiation propagation, and data dissemination. Additionally, in this new edition, he pays special attention to spectroscopic imaging and image processing, particularly heeding spectral image processing algorithms. Schott generally focuses on aerial and satellite imaging for Earth observation, with special attention paid to remote sensing done passively in the visible through thermal infrared region. Most remote sensing practitioners, as well as students pursuing the field, will find this book beneficial. Numerous graphics serve as examples. Summing Up: Recommended.
