CHOICE Review

Banks provides an introduction to modern signal processing and its related fields of image processing and pattern recognition, in three sections: one-dimensional signal processing, image processing, and pattern recognition. Signal processing covers discrete systems and signals, nonrecursive filters, discrete and fast Fourier transforms, analog filters, recursive filters, quantization effects, and hardware and software design. Image processing generalizes many of the signal-processing ideas to two-dimensional (image) systems, while covering stability and picture enhancement, restoration, and analysis. Data compression is stressed because images are formed from many individual pixels to produce significant amounts of data. Pattern recognition covers the decision-theoretic approach, syntactic methods, and neural networks. Important procedures are coded using Pascal. Suitable for graduate-level library collections supporting courses in signal processing, image processing, and pattern recognition.-C. Tappert, IBM Watson Research Center
