CHOICE Review

This book assembles many of the prints, drawings, and photographs that are part of a collection by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The reproductions, which are of pieces that have been collected since 1948, all relate to some aspect of medicine or disease. Included are drawings, prints, and photographs from Europe, Asia, and America, ranging from 16th-century woodblock prints to contemporary photographs of medical subjects. The volume is organized into general topic areas: Anatomy, Healers, Disease, Disability and Madness, and The Cycle of Life. A short but useful introduction to each chapter is provided at the beginning of the book and more detailed descriptions of individual plates are available in a separate section following the illustrations. Most plates are black and white, with some making use of a third color. The book is well presented and the reproductions are of high quality. Recommended for lower-division undergraduates and for readers with a special interest in medical or health-related subjects; also of value to students of art.-N.R. Eder, Pacific Northwest College of Art
