CHOICE Review
Collected here are a number of articles written over the last decade by Wilson, a well-known British feminist and Marxist. They are partly responses to other British socialist-feminist writings (e.g. Sheila Rowbottom, Lynn Segal, and Hilary Wainwright's Beyond the Fragments, 1981) and partly reflections on theoretical developments within the women's movement generally (e.g., the rediscovery of Freud, the impact of deconstructionism, the debates over sexuality, especially lesbianism and pornography). The underlying themes and preoccupations-the ``hidden agendas'' of the title-in these writings have to do with relations between the autonomous women's movement and the left, between consciousness and practical politics, between lifestyle politics and the potentially revolutionary transformation of society. Wilson's analysis is brilliant, but sophisticated: the articles assume a thorough familiarity with feminist issues and perspectives, and at least a basic knowledge of British politics in general. Most of these writings are not available else where in the US; library collections serving researchers in the areas of feminism, socialism, or contemporary British politics should include this collection of Wilson's intelligent and insightful critiques.-M.M.
