CHOICE Review

Russell and Chopra's excellent up-to-date book discusses the properties of antibacterial agents and how they work. They open with a description of the development and general nature of antibacterial agents. More detailed material is introduced with an emphasis on such topics as mode of action of antibiotics; how antibiotics reach target organs; uptake of antibiotics by bacteria; and sporicidal agents. The rest of the book covers the growing problems of bacterial resistance to many of the antibiotics on the market today. The authors clearly explain the genetic and biochemical mechanisms of resistance seen in many bacteria that are no longer affected by antibiotics. The impact on society of bacterial resistance is vividly presented and counteracting strategies are suggested. This book could well serve as a text in an advanced course in microbiology, biochemistry, or pharmacology. Highly recommended for graduate-level microbiologists, biochemists, and medical scientists.
