Booklist Review

A source of information for professional restorers, interior designers, and homeowners, this pictorial dictionary surveys architectural details of British and American domestic interiors from 1475 to 1996. It is a book of illustrations supported by concise, well-written text and captions. Coedited by a former curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum and an American professor of architectural history, the various chapters were written by British and American academic or curatorial specialists. Chronologically arranged, the work treats British and American architecture separately through the Victorian period. Beginning with the arts and crafts movement, British and American information is combined, reflecting the closer relationship of the two countries' architecture. Following the 1950^-1996 chapter are chapters on British and American vernacular architecture and an essay by Peter Sutton giving practical advice to prospective restorers of a historical building. Supporting appendixes provide one-or two-paragraph biographies of major architects and designers, a glossary of more than 300 clearly defined terms, directories of British and American suppliers of architectural details, a bibliography of English-language reference sources, and an index of subjects and illustrations. Throughout the work, when there is variation between British and American terms, both are used separated by a slash (terraced house/row house). Although the basic arrangement is chronological, information on specific details (doors, fireplaces, walls, lighting, etc.) can also be found by utilizing color tabs on the outer edge of right-hand pages. This allows the reader to find information on desired detail in various time periods. The major strength of this work is its generous supply of more than 3,000 handsome illustrations. Every page has black-and-white photographs, line drawings, and floor plans; there are approximately 400 clear color photographs of details and interiors. Elements of Style contains useful information for professionals and laypersons interested in restoring or remodeling domestic architecture. An attractive, straightforward reference book, it will have value in public and academic libraries.
