Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Anxiety disorders are the number one mental health problem among North American women, and second only to substance abuse in men. This comprehensive, step-by-step guide for overcoming panic attacks, phobias, and other anxiety disorders is designed as an accessible self-help manual for those struggling with anxiety, as well as a complete treatment program for use by therapists. First published in 1990, The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook has sold 98,000 copies and become the most used and recommended work on the subject among therapists. This revised edition features two new chapters: "Core Fear," dealing with the use of hypnotic regression and eye movement therapy to treat deeply rooted fears, and "Anxiety-Perpetuating Traits," which covers perfectionism, the need for control, and the need for approval.

On cover: Simple, concise, step-by-step directions for mastery of relaxation, exercise, coping with panic, real-life desensitization, overcoming negative self-talk, changing mistaken beliefs, visualization, expressing feelings, assertiveness, self-esteem, nutrition, medication.

Includes bibliographical references.

Library Journal Review

This book excels not only in explaining the cause and nature of anxiety disorders and phobias but also in describing treatments. Director of the Anxiety Treatment Center in Santa Rosa (California), Bourne emphasizes the cognitive-behavioral model of treatment but includes information on biopsychiatry, intense psychotherapy, and spirituality as additional treatment modalities. This is truly a "workbook," with exercises designed to facilitate recovery, either through private use or in conjunction with professional therapy. If your library already owns the 1990 edition and money is an object, you can probably pass on this revision, which updates the definitions of anxiety and phobia so that they conform with the new DSM-IV diagnostic criteria and includes new information on the biological causes of anxiety and related treatment developments. However, if your collection lacks a good lay reader's book on anxiety and phobia, this is an excellent choice.‘Jennifer Amador, Central State Hosp. Medical Lib., Petersburg, Va. (c) Copyright 2010.
