Library Journal Review

Drawing on her experience designing and producing her own line of hand-knitted garments, British craftswoman Ellen has written a book that will appeal both to the budding knitwear designer and to the knitter who wants to modify published designs. Ellen emphasizes careful attention to the characteristics of different types of knitted fabric as preliminary in the design process. She discusses knitting techniques, color, texture, pattern shaping, and finishing details as they relate to knitwear design, and she has also included a stitch library and an appealing selection of projects designed to stimulate the reader's own ideas. Color illustrations, line drawings, and photographs of Ellen's own work add to the inspirational value of the volume. British knitting terminology is used throughout, but this should be no problem for most experienced knitters. If you can afford only one knitwear design book, the choice would be Deborah Newton's Designing Knitwear ( LJ 4/15/92), but any library with demand for this type of material should seriously consider adding Ellen's volume as well.-- Janice Zlendich, California State Univ.
