CHOICE Review

This superb volume is the record of an exhibition of early German drawings in English collections with an emphasis on those in the British Museum. In effect, it becomes a history of German draftsmanship of the period--one of the best, if not the best, in the English language. Rowlands is Keeper of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum and an authority in the field, particularly with regard to Holbein. A concise introduction discussing the complex pattern of styles and functions of drawings in the period is followed by entries on more than 200 drawings. Each work is reproduced in excellent black and white or in outstanding color plates (40 so illustrated). Each artist is given a brief but informative biography. Most impressively, the entries are packed with information--from data on attribution, provenance, and condition to problems of artistic, historic, and social context. Although Durer and Holbein are unquestionably the presiding geniuses of this period, a remarkable number of talented artists, from Austria and Switzerland as well as Germany, emerge from this exemplary volume. There are also an index of artists and a full bibliography. -F. W. Robinson, Rhode Island School of Design
