CHOICE Review

In this first of a two-volume set of essays, a major figure in the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations collects writings that span nearly 40 years of research on containing anxiety in institutions. Included is Lyth's classic study on nursing services in a general teaching hospital; she analyzes the high level of stress and anxiety chronic among nurses and its adverse effects on patient recovery. The author also examines the effects of extended hospitalizations on children and recommends methods to counteract negative effects. She argues that the viability of social institutions is intimately connected with the techniques used to contain anxiety. Lyth offers important historical reflections on the Tavistock tradition. An introductory conversation with Menzies Lyth provides an overview and explanation of the essays that follow. A comprehensive index and bibliography enhance the work. Recommended for professionals in the health field, especially nurses and nursing students. -A. L. Deming, West Chester University
