CHOICE Review

A book for serious middle- and long-distance runners and coaches. Biomechanical principles applicable to running are discussed thoroughly; readers will need a working knowledge of physiology. Cardiovascular dynamics of exercise are presented in terms of the interaction of systems, effects of proper training and genetic makeup on maximum performance ability, and the use of laboratory equipment to measure and monitor these abilities. Training procedures are covered in depth--from goal setting through the various cycles to recovery and the start of the next cycle. Sample training programs of varying lengths are included as well as a sample log or training diary. Comprehensive conditioning is approached through total body fitness for running including flexibility, strength, power, endurance, and body composition testing. Includes both physical and mental components of preparation and attainment of successful stress management in training from different aspects of overtraining and staleness. All terms used in each chapter are defined, supporting studies are cited, and a complete bibliography is included. For upper-division undergraduate and graduate students. -G. C. Meyer, College of Staten Island, CUNY
