CHOICE Review

The introduction describes this book as investigating the ways in which "women are making meaning about women making meaning." The 14 articles, uneven in quality and disparate in topic, constitute an idiosyncratic survey of the field of feminist communications studies, with a particular emphasis upon the ways in which the intersection of gender, race, and class both produces female subjectivities and determines female conditions of production and reception. Some of the articles are essentially literature reviews, useful primarily as introductions; others strike out in new and interesting directions; whereas others seem tangentially related to the communications field. Part 1 provides overviews of recent developments in the literature and in theoretical approaches; Part 2 deals with "new categories and new topics of inquiry," such as the body and women's alternative media; articles in Part 3 are case studies in gender, class, and race. Some individual articles may prove helpful to those teaching and researching in the areas of communications, cultural studies, and women's studies. Advanced undergraduate; graduate; faculty.
