CHOICE Review

A highly readable book containing 15 short chapters describing the economic and social effects of the growth of motorization in most of the major countries and regions of the world. Chapters are written by authoritative historians native to each country: the US, Britain, Germany, France, Japan, Russia, Canada, Czechoslovakia, and Zaire. The period treated is mostly the early and middle 1900s. The book does not describe the most recent fast-breaking developments, but rather dwells on the slower, longer-term truths accompanying the spread of private motorization in the world: truths that will persist into the future. There is no comparable worldwide book. Coverage for each country is similar, but necessarily much briefer, than John B. Rae's wonderful book, The Road and Car in American Life (CH, Feb '72)-Rae is a chapter author in this book. The quality of the references, tables, index, printing, and binding are excellent. No bibliography or illustrations. This volume will appeal to students of 20th-century world and economic history, as well as to readers interested in transportation and the automobile.-D. Brand, Harvard University
