Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

This series of essays by prominent academics and practitioners investigates in detail the history of performance in the classical Greek and Roman world. Beginning with the earliest examples of 'dramatic' presentation in the epic cycles and reaching through to the latter days of the Roman Empire and beyond, this 2007 Companion covers many aspects of these broad presentational societies. Dramatic performances that are text-based form only one part of cultures where presentation is a major element of all social and political life. Individual chapters range across a two thousand year timescale, and include specific chapters on acting traditions, masks, properties, playing places, festivals, religion and drama, comedy and society, and commodity, concluding with the dramatic legacy of myth and the modern media. The book addresses the needs of students of drama and classics, as well as anyone with an interest in the theatre's history and practice.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 341-353) and index.

CHOICE Review

This volume continues the "Cambridge Companions to Topics" series, a companion library to the "Oxford readings ..." sequence, which has likewise kept apace with scholarship with the goal of providing (useful?) sets of (significant?) papers on various topics. In their introduction McDonald (Univ. of California, San Diego) and Walton (Univ. of Hull, UK) recognize the questionable usefulness of this volume, acknowledging that others have covered this territory--for example, the exemplary Cambridge Companion to Greek Tragedy, ed. by P.E. Easterling (CH, Jun'98, 35-5490), and several Oxford volumes that might overlap with the anticipated coverage of this collection. As one might (lamentably) expect, Roman drama gets rather short shrift in comparison to its Greek antecedent. The essays themselves are a mixed bag; the best is Fritz Graf's excellent "Religion and Drama," but Jon Hesk's on the "socio-political dimension of ancient tragedy" seems to be a paper in search of a collection. Someone at Cambridge should have decided that the entire spectrum of classical drama was a bit much for a companion; as it stands, this jejune volume will subtract from a library budget and give little in return. Summing Up: Not recommended. L. M. Fratantuono Ohio Wesleyan University
