CHOICE Review

Many people associate architects with the figure of Howard Roark, the central character in Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead (1943). However, as many students realize when they begin architecture school, reality is nothing like what is presented in the novel. Architectural design is a complicated practice that has many different requirements, complexities, conditions, and rewards. Anderson (Oxford Brookes Univ., UK) offers a wonderful introduction to the challenges that students, practitioners, and clients face when engaged in the design and production of architecture. The range of topics includes architectural education and the student experience, as well as the detailing, construction, and occupation of buildings. Tying these together, Anderson discusses issues architects encounter in designing projects: from the understanding of the site and the development of the design through interactions with clients, the production of models and drawings, and building construction. The book includes contemporary architectural design case studies; interviews with practitioners addressing key architectural ideas and problems faced, and their solutions; and samples of student assignments and projects. This book is an excellent introduction for anyone interested in becoming involved in architectural design. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates, two-year technical program students, professionals/practitioners, and general readers. L. E. Carranza Roger Williams University
