CHOICE Review

Editor Kathe begins with a pertinent quotation from late 1962 by British sculptor and modernist Anthony Caro: "Everything is the stuff of art." The first third of this interesting book on fabric as art discusses fabric, fiber, and textiles as fine arts. "Textiles at the Cutting Edge," the first chapter, describes how textiles came to be seen as art. Next "Contemporary Textiles: The Art Fabric" goes into more detail on the techniques fabric artists use. The rest is divided into four sections addressing drawings, paintings, sculptures, and spaces. Included are profiles of artists whose work in textiles, fibers, and fabric align with these traditional art forms. The coverage of artists is international, though the majority are from the US, England, and Europe. The artist profiles include discussions of influences on the artist, trends, and the different media the particular artist uses, along with several examples of each artist's work in excellent color photos. The last part presents very brief biographical information on each artist. Most of these artists do not appear in the widely used indexing and abstracting services, so this rather small book would be quite useful for art, textile, fashion design, and costuming students. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-level undergraduates through professionals/practitioners. N. A. Mackey Missouri State University
