Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

This book addresses the challenge that business managers face in building world class manufacturing organizations and argues that the flagging competitiveness of American manufacturing industries is as much the result of human and management factors as it is of intense competition and unsupportive economic policies.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 401-409) and index.

CHOICE Review

Hayes (Harvard), Wheelwright (Stanford), and Clark (Harvard) deal with the decline over the past dozen years in the world competitiveness of US manufacturing, evident by the erosion of the relative position of US companies with respect to cost, quality, productivity, and innovation. According to the authors, those factors are not the actual cause of the decline; rather they strongly attribute the root cause of the decline to the reluctance of a large segment of US managers to learn and accept change. The book is much more than a critique; it also provides concrete plans for enabling managers to compete in the world-class milieu. Information is clearly and logically presented, and the subject treatment comprehensive and thorough. The authors convey a message of optimism, supported by cases of successful organizations. Similar indications of success, but from a different viewpoint, are included in John E. Ettlie's Taking Care of Manufacturing (CH, Dec '88). Excellent bibliography and source notes. Highly recommended for academic libraries. It can be read with profit by undergraduates, graduates and faculty, as well as by practicing managers. -W. C. Struning, Seton Hall University
