Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

This book illustrates how EXCEL can be used to help scientists process, analyze, and present scientific data. EXCEL provides a flexible environment that can be used to prepare spreadsheet solutions for scientific data processing problems. It demonstrates step-by-step how to program EXCEL to perform appropriate tasks, automate repetitive data processing tasks, and prepare integrated documents by transferring data and graphics. It covers problems such as how to perform linear regression and use the built-in statistical tools of EXCEL, as well as addressing advanced topics such as graphing complex equations, model building and the use of VBA and macros for user interface. Though the examples emphasize chemical applications, the information provided will prove useful to all scientists.

CHOICE Review

Diamond and Hanratty have two main goals: to instruct the reader in the use of the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program (chapters 1 and 3), and to show spreadsheet applications in chemistry (chapters 4 to 8). The accompanying computer disk contains spreadsheet files discussed in the text. The first three chapters quickly take the reader through the basics of Excel, focusing mainly on the scientific uses of a spreadsheet. Graphing, statistical methods, regression analysis, and the use of macros are presented. The case studies are drawn mostly from upper-division undergraduate course work in physical and analytical chemistry. Topics include quantum chemistry, kinetics, equilibria, titration methods, and importing experimental data from instrumental output. Detailed Excel instructions and some explanation of the underlying chemistry are provided for all the case studies. Recommended as an ancillary work for upper-division undergraduate or beginning graduate chemistry students. R. J. Shine; Ramapo College of New Jersey
