CHOICE Review

In this concise and well-written book, Town develops a complete and sound guide to triathlon training. He includes practical information on the physiological, nutritional, and psychological concerns of triathlon competition and also discusses training programs, heat acclimatization, diet, mental strategies, biomechanical techniques, equipment maintenance, injury prevention, and race-week and race-day preparation. The book contains some information of a technical nature, but the author presents it in a highly readable manner. Town's ability to clearly communicate this information to the novice is one of the strongest points of the book. Because the book's emphasis is on preparing for a triathlon, the section discussing the ``Ironman'' competition seems somewhat out of place; although it provides a human-interest aspect to the book, this section could have been left out. Overall, the book is exceptional in presentation and is recommended for lower-division undergraduate students and general audiences.-J.L. Durstine, University of South Carolina
