CHOICE Review

Pungor writes from his teaching experience since 1949 at the Technical University in Budapest. Aptly described as a short book of "96 experiments in instrumental analysis," the book covers the major instrumental areas of electroanalysis, optical molecular/atomic and x-ray spectroscopies, thermal methods, chromatographies, and radioanalytical and flow analytical techniques. Each specific technique is introduced with a brief section discussing principles, and is followed by a number of experiments that illustrate the scope of the technique, similar to C.N. Reilley and Donald T. Sawyer's classic Experiments for Instrumental Methods (1961). The largest chapter on liquid chromatography (a quarter of the manuscript) has adequate descriptive material on topics and extensive references, which are indexed within the text. The rest of the manuscript is in stark contrast to this style. The explanation of technique principles is usually so brief that it is confusing and ambiguous to the novice, and must be supplemented by additional works. Discussion of instrumental design and components is minimal or not present. Reference sections are brief, or nonexistent (five of 23 chapters). This book is more suited for faculty as an outline than for undergraduate students in a laboratory course. It should not be substituted for such comprehensive texts as Hobart H. Willard, et al., Instrumental Methods of Analysis (5th ed., 1974) that have both principles and experiments. J. F. Belliveau; Providence College
