CHOICE Review

Powers (Univ. of Greenwich, London) brings together handsome illustrative materials that include stunning contemporary color photographs by Morley von Sternberg, plans, and, where necessary, vintage photographs of lost or altered buildings, with informative catalog entries and biographical sketches organized around representative works by the leading practitioners of British modernism. Most firms are represented by a single building, but major figures, such as Welles Coates, Owen Williams, Berthold Lubetkin, and Connell, Ward & Lucas, have two and three works depicted. Women architects are well represented. The catalog is introduced by a highly informative essay that elucidates the complex issues and events--the lingering influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, WW I, the Great Depression, the influx of practitioners from Germany and elsewhere, the influence of Le Corbusier and Asplund, the politics of modernism and nationalism, controversies over the appropriateness of materials--that contributed to the distinctive nature of the movement in Britain. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
