Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Jack B. Yeats is probably the greatest painter Ireland has ever produced, although he is often overshadowed somewhat by his more famous brother, the poet W. B. Yeats. First published to great acclaim in 1993, this is one of very few popular books on Yeat's work. With more than 100 colour plates and 175 black and white illustrations, it is an authoritative and glorious appreciation of Yeats's vast and varied output.

CHOICE Review

Jack B. Yeats (1871-1957), son of the painter John Butler Yeats and the brother of the poet William Butler Yeats, ranks as one of Ireland's most versatile and original artists. This introduction to his life and art, although useful in presenting more than 200 illustrations (more than 100 in good color) of his work in attractive format at a reasonaable price, makes no claim to definitive scholarship. Rosenthal's short text sketches the essentials of Yeats's life, covering his wide-ranging activities in painting, book illustration, and literature. Yet more could have been said about this fascinating man; about his complex relationship with his famous father and brother; about his attitudes towards the political upheavals in early 20th-century Ireland; and about his place in modern art. Readers seeking a fuller picture of Yeats should turn to the books by Hilary Pyle, who assisted Rosenthal by providing the bibliography and plate notes for the present volume. Lack of an index requires that commentary on individual paintings be searched in the text. Undergraduate (all levels); general. W. S. Rodner; Tidewater Community College
