CHOICE Review

Harris (independent scholar) previously wrote The Genius of Robert Adam: His Interiors (CH, Apr'02, 39-4381), among other works. This excellent, handsome new publication uses 200 images (photographs and drawings) first published in the English weekly Country Life. Arthur Bolton began this documentation in 1913 and went on to publish a major two-volume study, The Architecture of Robert and James Adam (1922). Harris's volume begins with an excellent general introduction to Adam's life and work, including buildings not covered in the main body of the book. Especially fascinating is her discussion of the importance of Country Life and Bolton's contribution. The book's focus is 16 of the best-known Adam houses, some of which have been destroyed or stripped of their original furnishings. Despite the title, six London houses and several garden buildings are included. Unlike most recent publications on Adam, this work reproduces the houses as they appeared in Country Life and not as they are today (in some cases relocated to museums). The superior color plates of interiors and of the architectural drawings are major additions to the original illustrations. Harris provides excellent descriptions of such important country houses as Kedleston, Syon House, Osterley Park, Saltram, and Kenwood House. Very good selective bibliography. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-level undergraduates and above; general readers. T. J. McCormick emeritus, Wheaton College (MA)
