CHOICE Review

As a basis for contemporary ceramic art, the brick has been employed far less frequently than the tile, vessel, or freely modeled sculptural form. This is curious, given the suitability of brickwork to the kind of monumental outdoor sculpture that often attracts important commissions. The relative lack of literature on the subject may well have been an inhibitory factor. This book, by expert Heeney (Univ. of Wolverhampton, UK), who has completed numerous large-scale public pieces, will no doubt inspire interest in the medium among both veteran ceramists and those just embarking on their careers. Heeney provides important technical information as well as clear color images of several of her own sculptures in various stages of production. A chapter on CAD/CAM technologies suggests tantalizing possibilities for the role of computers. Avoiding specialized terminology, Heeney also acquaints readers with brick clay bodies, techniques of manufacture and bonding, and the history of kiln designs. Although sections describing and illustrating the brickworks of nearly two dozen contemporary artists provide something of interest to general readers, the book is geared primarily to ceramists. Students in particular will find Brickworks an excellent resource. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. All levels. G. R. Brown Kansas State University
