CHOICE Review

Cursory inspection of this book might lead the reviewer to query ``Why publish another book like B.C. Kuo's Automatic Control Systems (5th ed., 1987)?'' Both are written for the upper-division engineering undergraduate, are published by the same company, and include separate prefaces to acclaim personal computer software with documentation available from the respective authors. Critical review, however, reveals significant difference. Phillips and Harbor demonstrate an organization more adapted to practical aspects of analysis and design than Kuo is able to achieve in his successive editions of an organizational style more entrenched in mathematics. Consequently, the practicing engineer as well as the student will appreciate the authorship authority of Phillips and Harbor. Moreover, their book includes the scope of digital and nonlinear control systems, an asset for a single volume. Stylistic quality and adequacy of illustrations and references equal or surpass other similar works. The inclusion of a brief summary concluding each chapter is extremely helpful.
