School Library Journal Review

YA-- Filling a void on contemporary art history, this colorful, picture-filled, academic work will greatly assist art-history students with their research. Chapters cover modernism, abstract expressionism, minimalism, Light Art, Resurgent Realism, neo-expressionism, and neo-abstraction. The information is fairly comprehensive, although the '50s and '60s are emphasized. The reading level is advanced and students with some background knowledge will gain more from the text. However, the numerous pictures, at least one per page, will appeal to less-informed students. Slightly less than half of the pictures are in full-color; each one is identified with the artist, title, materials, size, and present location. The index is detailed, but one must know the artist's name in order to locate a specific work of art. --Sandi Hammonds & Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA (c) Copyright 2010.
