Library Journal Review

The National Gallery in London has long set the standard for scholarly catalogs when publishing its collection of around 2000 paintings, masterworks of the Western tradition dating from 1250 to 1920. This handbook, arranged in four chronological sections mirroring the gallery's physical set-up, provides excellent if small color images and discussion for just over 200 of the choicest works in the collection. Langmuir (head of education, National Gallery) has looked at the pictures with care and written observantly and very well, usually offering about 500 words per picture; this book will serve excellently as a guide for gallery visitors and as a survey of highlights for others. Highly recommended.-Jack Perry Brown, Art Inst. of Chicago Libs. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
