CHOICE Review

In this history of disabled persons in sports, a section is devoted to defining disability as opposed to handicap, and may be a sound etymological approach to a group once reviled. During the French Revolution such prejudice waned; and now, persons with disabilities are encouraged to compete. Long lists of associations that encourage such competition are presented in the book. The word "elite" appears frequently, and means that where money and influence are available, there is sport for those who have disabilities. A questionable idea appears in a long section on so-called dwarfs (people less than four feet, ten inches in height); these persons can participate in almost any sport and there is no reason to single them out as disabled. Female gymnasts in this height category are certainly not disabled. Federal legislation has opened the way into sports for the disabled; however, prejudice still exists. (In a study by this reviewer, reported in a 1947 issue of Mental Hygiene, having disabilities did not bother students as much as not being accepted in society did.) An excellent feature in the book is the many one-page mini-biographies (with pictures) of persons with disabilities who have become champions in sports.
