CHOICE Review

Stanley (Manchester University) has edited a fine and unique collection. The introductory chapters are good discussions of the theories, methodologies, and politics of feminist sociological research. Later chapters relate contributors' experiences as researchers and activists from some of the various "standpoints," but the collection does not include the full range of perspectives expected from the espoused agenda of avoiding "monolithic feminism." The volume is more than an anthology of the trials and tribulations of qualitative sociological research, and invites readers to think critically about research method and process, researcher biography and experience, and analysis. The essays are engaging, personal, and consistent, although not all chapters fulfill a promise of extraordinary quality or depth. The index could be more comprehensive, but with its bibliographic quality this collection is a valuable resource on British feminist scholarship for libraries supporting undergraduate or graduate students in sociology or women's studies.
