CHOICE Review

This 10th edition (6th ed., CH, Oct'95, 33-0630) updates a popular textbook by D. Baskerville (emer., Univ. of Colorado, Denver) and T. Baskerville (broadcaster; writer-producer) that is often used in introductory music business courses. It can also be used for more specialized courses on music careers, artist management, music and the law, arts administration, popular culture, and music entrepreneurship. Each chapter concludes with sections titled "Chapter Takeaways," "Key Terms," and "Discussion Questions." This edition adds a new section titled "The Digital Millennium," which discusses the quagmire of conflicting benefits and disadvantages of technologies for the recording industry. Additionally, it features a chapter on entrepreneurship, identifying social networking as perhaps the most significant digital phenomenon of recent years. The changes are not significant in terms of changed pagination, but they do reflect major industry changes. Also signaling the changes in web-based information, this volume now includes career guide links. The book's coverage of the art music world does not do justice to the financial problems in the industry and the continual need for change and entrepreneurship in that arena. Overall, the volume is informative and especially useful in the arena of popular music. A wide audience will find it valuable. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and above; general readers. K. A. Abromeit Oberlin College
