CHOICE Review

This is yet another book about Dvor'ak to be published during the centenary of his 1893-95 sojourn in the US. Other works previously reviewed here are Dvor'ak in America (CH, Dec'93) and Dvor'ak and His World (CH, Feb'94). Otakar Dvor'ak, the composer's youngest son, completed these remembrances shortly before his own death in 1961. Slightly over 100 pages, they contain many anecdotes about Anton'in and provide numerous intimate glimpses of the composer's reactions to and feelings about people and events in both his personal and his professional life. This very readable English translation captures Otakar's admiration for his father, and Polansky's capable annotations fill out Otakar's omissions and correct his mistakes. In "The Dvor'ak Search," editor Polansky, founder and director of the Czech Historical Research Center in Iowa, recounts his recent visit to the composer's Bohemian landmarks and encounters with the composer's descendents. The second half of the work consists of letters to and from Dvor'ak, many previously unpublished. The book has numerous pictures of places, relatives, and professional associates. It offers a very human dimension to this famous and admired composer. Recommended for all libraries. W. K. Kearns; University of Colorado at Boulder
