CHOICE Review

Hanna Sheehy Skeffington was an important figure in the Irish labor, nationalist, and feminist movements in the first half of the 20th century. A militant feminist, she helped establish the Irish Women's Franchise League in 1908, spent time in prison for the suffrage cause, and continued to fight for women's equality for the remainder of her life. Also a militant Irish nationalist, Skeffington had been chosen by the leaders of the 1916 Irish uprising to become one of the five members of a Civil Provisional Irish Government if the revolt were successful. In addition to being a rebel on gender, nationalist, and class issues, she was an atheist in a Catholic society and a pacifist who lived through two world wars. Ward's very thoroughly researched, readable full-length biography succeeds in arousing the reader's interest in Skeffington. It replaces Leah Levenson and Jerry Natterstad's Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington, Irish Feminist (CH, Sep'86). Upper-division undergraduates and above. H. L. Smith; University of Houston--Victoria
