Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

This book gathers together the myths, legends and folklore associated with the native Irish trees. The folklore has two main themes: the tree as a marker of important places such as a royal site or holy well, and the role of different trees as sources of magical power in folk customs and superstitions.

Bibliography: (pages 221-226) and index.

CHOICE Review

Mac Coitir's fascinating introduction to the folklore, myths, and legends connected with 24 trees native to Ireland ranges from the practical and medicinally useful Giolcach (Broom) to the mysterious and magical Sceach Gheal (Hawthorn). The common English, Irish, and scientific Latin names are provided for each tree along with its corresponding Ogham letter (the ancient Irish tree alphabet) and associated dates in the Irish tree calendar. The section on each tree begins with a brief summary, followed by examinations of "Folk Beliefs and Customs," "Legends and Mythology," "Seasonal Placing," and "Uses." The plentiful black-and-white illustrations are supplemented by six groups of original watercolor plates by Grania Langrishe. The author includes a general introduction to the folklore of trees, and essays on the Ogham alphabet and the related seasonal tree calendar. Although obviously focusing on Irish traditions, Mac Coitir interweaves examples from the folklore and mythology of many other cultures (e.g., Iceland, India, ancient Greece). An informative book, of particular value to students of the history, culture, and flora of Ireland (and other Celtic lands), and to folklorists in general. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
