CHOICE Review

This unpretentious essay juxtaposes Beckett and Giacometti in terms of kindred perspectives, artistic processes, and analogous products. Megged begins with their collaboration for a revival of Waiting for Godot in Paris in 1971 and then retrospectively shows how their compulsion to create, despite a conviction of inevitable failure, led to increasing spareness of line in Giacometti, increasing ellipsis in Beckett. The result is that Giacometti appears to illustrate Beckett; Beckett, to state Giacometti. Despite a few passing references to other artists and writers, Megged basically rests his argument on the implicit inferences that may be drawn from these creators. Megged never forces the analogy. Pertinently illustrated with Giacometti plates. For graduate students and general readers.-M.G. Rose, SUNY at Binghamton
