CHOICE Review

Carr provides information about the concerns of practitioners: conduct and emotional problems, learning disabilities, protection, suicide, schizophrenia, foster care, bereavement, divorce, major depression, and somatic illness. Three sections treat the common problem of childhood and adolescence and include assessment and management guidelines. Separate sections cover abuse and neglect and problems during major life transitions, identified as foster care, divorce, and bereavement. The book ends with an extensive 51-page bibliography. After information concerning "normal" development, other chapters describe classifying and consulting, interviewing, and report writing. Figures, tables, and cases give insight into diagnosing problems and their treatment. Those interested only in clinical psychology for children might find more useful the forthcoming third edition of The Handbook of Clinical Child Psychology, ed. by C. Eugene Walker and Michael C Roberts. This is the only title now available that covers clinical psychology for all young people, children, and adolescents. Unfortunately, Kenneth W. Merrell's Assessment of Behavioral, Emotional and Social Problems: Direct and Objective Methods for Use with Children and Adolescents (1994) is out of print and now dated. For additional depth in these areas and currency in research, methods, and theory, libraries might subscribe to Advances in Clinical Child Psychology, a highly regarded annual publication that presents salient information on many aspects of child psychology.
