CHOICE Review

This is a monumental, once-in-a-generation (or even a lifetime) work. Not alphabetical, it is really encyclopedic in scope, intended as an "in-depth, state-of-the-art review of toxicology" and includes hundreds of chapters by hundreds of authors from academia, industry, consulting firms, and government. It provides valuable overviews and extensive details in each of the volumes. There are very few areas omitted (e.g., toxicology of the eye). It is generally well conceived, organized, and edited, with separate editors for each volume. Coverage (by volume) is as follows: vol. 1. General Principles; 2. Testing; 3. Biotransformation and Metabolism; 4. Blood; 5. Immunotoxicology; 6. Cardiovascular Toxicology; 7. Renal Toxicology; 8. Respiratory System; 9. Intestinal System and Liver; 10. Reproductive and Endocrine Toxicology; 11. Nervous System and Behavioral Toxicology; 12. Carcinogens and Anticarcinogens; and 13. Index. The quality of chapters naturally varies. References to the primary literature are sparse in some, copious in others. An author-year rather than numerical footnote would have enhanced the value of the work, making it easier to recognize important references (not to mention easier to write and edit); figures adapted from primary literature are well referenced. Timeliness is always a problem in a multiauthored work, where the prompt are penalized by the need to wait for the tardy. (Chapter manuscripts were submitted mainly in mid-1995.) The fascinating early history of toxicology gets short shrift in the introductory volume but is picked up in several subsequent volumes. Many chapters include classical papers from the mid-1900s, an era often lost by those relying only on computerized searches. In this reviewer's view, such continuity is extremely valuable to students and researchers, as well as those interested in the intellectual history of the discipline. There are too many excellent chapters to acknowledge individually, and they range from broad reviews of morphology and physiology to substance-specific effects on particular organ systems. Introductory chapters will be especially valuable for the general reader, e.g., the chapters on toxicokinetics and apoptosis (vol. 1); enzyme regulation (vol. 3); immunotoxicology and overview of the immune system (vol. 5); mechanisms of injury in the glomerulus and proximal tubule (vol. 7); xenobiotic metabolism (vol. 9); selective vulnerability and cell signaling in nervous system and behavioral toxicology (vol. 11); and protooncogenes and tumor suppressor genes (vol. 12). Well produced and generally free of typographical errors, the book is attractively styled and figures are generally easy to read. Like the editors, this reviewer thinks these volumes are valuable for students, researchers, and managers who must understand toxicologic principles. It should be on the shelf of every toxicologist and environmental scientist, but the price (about 50 cents/page) is probably prohibitive for most individual practitioners accustomed to spending six cents/page for typical toxicology works. According to the publisher, volumes will be sold individually (price not yet available). The set can also be purchased with a CD-ROM (not received for review) for $4,250. Considering the massiveness of the set (more than 6,600 pages excluding index), the added investment in a CD-ROM sounds like an excellent idea. Unfortunately, price will discourage many academic libraries from acquiring it as well. It would still be a bargain at half the price. Dr. McQueen received a B.S. in Biology from Marywood College (1969), a M.S. in Pharmacology (1972) from New York University and the Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She joined the staff of the American Health Foundation and established a research program in chemical carcinogenesis and pharmacogenetics. In 1990 she moved to the University of Arizona where she is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, a member of the Center for Toxicology/Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center (SWEHSC), and Director of the SWEHSC Community Outreach and Education Program.

Dr. McQueen is a Councilor for the International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics and a member of the Education Committee of the Society of Toxicology. She is also active in the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. She has served as member of the National Research Council Committee on Naturally Occurring Carcinogens in the Diet. Her editorial responsibilities include the editorial boards of Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, Cell Biology and Toxicology, Toxicology in Vitro and Drug Metabolism and Disposition .

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Jay Gandolfi was born and raised in the San Francisco bay area. He attended college at the University of California at Davis. He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Oregon State University. This was followed by a Post Doctoral Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in anesthetic fate and toxicity. He joined the University of Arizona in 1978 and is currently Professor of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology, and Toxicology. His interests are in the mechanisms of cellular toxicity and cell death. Current studies concentrate on the role of the immune system in fluorocarbon induced hepatotoxicity, the reversal of toxicity using agents adminstered post-intoxication, and the use of in vitro systems to evaluate cell specific injury. The toxicants of interest include: halogenated hydrocarbons, volatile anesthetics, metals, cysteine conjugates, and classical hepatic/renal toxicants. He has served on the Toxicology Study Section for the National Institutes of Health and has held several offices in the Society of Toxicology including President of the Mechanisms Specialty Section. He is currently Chair of the Graduate Program in Pharmacology and Toxicology and Associate Director of the Superfund Hazardous Waste Program.

He lives with his wife, Judi, on the "Double J Ranch" on the outskirts of Tucson. They enjoy horseback riding in the mountains of Southern Arizona and playing with their numerous pets. They have three grown sons, two who are engineers and one who is in advertising. E-mail: gandolfi@u.arizona.edu
