CHOICE Review

This collaborative report/manual evolved from the work of 500 adapted physical educators charged with developing guidelines that serve to describe not only their profession but also the qualifications of those professionals who deliver curricular content. The initial chapter of the manual discusses the demographics of the APE National Standards Committee and project staff and charts the project's course. The remainder of the book is divided into 15 standard areas (e.g., human development, curriculum, communication, teaching, ethics) that each possess five levels, including name, major components, subcomponents, content, and applications. The text explains how the content of the standards is organized, including the unique knowledge and applications adapted physical educators are expected to know and be able to demonstrate. The manual contains a helpful glossary, is well referenced, and is recommended to all adapted physical educators, recreational therapists, and special educators. M. L. Krotee; University of Minnesota
