Library Journal Review

In this latest work on Picasso, the authors aim to scrutinize the relationships between Picasso's sculpture and painting, basing their effort on a 1994 exhibition at the Tate Gallery. Their arguments are extremely scholarly in nature as they make connections that link the artist's sculptural motivations to his work on paper and canvas. The authors and guest essayists draw upon an impressive range of artist statements, art historical investigation, and object analysis. Golding's long introduction is a wide-ranging examination of Picasso's thought processes and technical development. A particularly insightful essay by Claude Ruiz-Picasso treats "The Valley of Gold: Picasso as Potter." The 332 illustrations, over half in color, are high quality. Yet given its tone, this work is clearly pitched to dedicated students and professionals in the field. For large academic libraries.-Paula Baxter, NYPL (c) Copyright 2010.
