Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

The names of Masaccio (1401-28) and Masolino (1383-1440) are inseparable, and their collaboration is an essential starting point for the study of either artist. Masaccio's Holy Trinity and the recently cleaned collaborative frescos in the Brancacci Chapel in Florence are key works in the development of Western art.

Paul Joannides' catalogue raisonné forms a uniquely authoritative and perfectly up-to-date study of the total oeuvre of both artists. Composed with lucidity and richly illustrated, it makes accessible to all lovers of art - from the connoisseur to the casual reader - some of the greatest paintings of the early Renaissance, and most momentous works of Western painting.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 469-482) and indexes.

CHOICE Review

There is no doubt that despite Masaccio's tragically brief life--dead at age 27 in 1428--he emerges as the key innovator, and arguably the greatest painter, of Quattrocento Florence. The recent cleaning of the Brancacci Chapel has spawned a host of new Masaccio studies, and has renewed debate about his collaboration with his older contemporary, Masolino. This book, however, is the first thorough monograph in English since Luciano Berti's Masaccio (CH, May'68), and Joannides surveys the complete oeuvre of Masolino along with that of Masaccio. Although the text itself offers few genuinely new insights, it does provide a coherent overview of both painters' lives and careers; of special usefulness is the catalog, which summarizes the often massive literature on individual works in lucid and sensible fashion. Richly illustrated, with 479 plates (more than 160 in color). Advanced undergraduate; graduate; faculty; general. J. I. Miller; California State University, Long Beach
