CHOICE Review

A very complete overview of the process of grief and bereavement. Parkes describes the psychological and physical reactions of grief; the process of searching for lost loved ones; the mechanisms that are normatively used to avoid grieving; the ways in which self-blame and anger play a role in depression; and the kinds of helping relationships that enable the grieving process to occur. Relying on psychodynamic, behavioral, and social systems models for understanding grief, Parkes does a fine job in synthesizing complex theoretical and conceptual frameworks without becoming too general or diffuse. The author also uses epidemiological data to highlight ``at risk'' groups and to identify appropriate interventions for them. This book would be a fine addition to undergraduate and graduate libraries and provides a broad framework for looking at more specialized populations and their problems (e.g., Phyllis R.
